What happens to bad people when they die? Or to those who aren’t Christians? Do they suffer forever in a fiery hell?

Many assume so, but does eternal torment fit a loving God? Would He punish someone forever for a brief lifetime of mistakes? That concept portrays God as cruel, contradicting His nature of love (1 John 4:8).

Surprisingly, the Bible doesn’t teach an ever-burning hell. Scripture does speak of judgment and punishment for the unrepentant, but what is that ultimate fate? Jesus Himself said, “For God so loved the world… that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). The alternative to eternal life isn’t eternal suffering—it’s perishing, ceasing to exist.

Romans 6:23 reinforces this: “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life.” Death means the end of life, not eternal torment. Ezekiel 18:4 confirms, “The soul who sins shall die.” The final judgment results in destruction, not unending agony (Malachi 4:1-3).

God is just and merciful. The wicked will face punishment—a lake of fire that consumes them completely (Revelation 20:14-15). This is not eternal torture but final, merciful destruction.

Hell is a widely misunderstood topic, but the Bible presents a just God who doesn’t delight in suffering. Instead, He offers hope, mercy, and the promise of eternal life to those who choose Him. Will you study what Scripture truly says about hell?
