The Day of Atonement is one of God’s most solemn holy days, set apart not for feasting but for fasting and reflection. Its meaning reaches to the heart of God’s plan: humanity cannot be reconciled to Him without both the covering of sin and the removal of Satan.
On a personal level, the apostle John reminds us: “If anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world” (1 John 2:1–2). The word propitiation means an offering that turns away wrath. Through Christ’s blood, the penalty of sin – death – is satisfied, and God’s wrath is removed. We are reconciled to the Father, covered by Christ, our mercy seat.
But reconciliation requires more than forgiveness. The world remains under Satan’s sway (1 John 5:19). True atonement demands his removal. That is why the ceremonies in Leviticus 16 included two goats: one sacrificed for the Lord to cover sins, and another – the live goat – sent away into the wilderness, symbolizing the removal of Satan.
Together, these goats show that both elements are essential: sin must be covered, and the deceiver must be separated from humanity. Revelation 20 points to the day when Satan will be bound, making global reconciliation possible.
Today, as God’s people fast on Atonement, we remember our dependence on Him, rejoice in Christ’s intercession as our High Priest, and look forward to the time when the whole world will finally be at one with God.
