Jesus told His disciples, “You are the salt of the earth.” But what did He mean?

Scripture frequently uses physical things to communicate spiritual truths. God’s Word is compared to food, providing the spiritual nourishment we need. So when Jesus calls His followers “salt,” He is giving us another picture of our responsibility toward that Word and toward the people around us.

Salt enhances. Properly used, it draws out the flavors already present in food without fundamentally changing it. Likewise, our lives should demonstrate what God’s way of life produces. Jesus described qualities such as humility, mercy, purity, righteousness and peacemaking—and then told His disciples to be salt and light to the world. Our conduct should make God’s way visible and help others recognize its goodness.

Salt also preserves. Scripture repeatedly instructs God’s people to carefully keep His commandments, guarding what He has given rather than adding to it or taking away from it. We are called to make God’s way attractive, but never by changing God’s way.

Jesus also gave a warning: salt that loses its usefulness is discarded. Our hypocrisy, pride, bitterness, contentiousness or inconsistent conduct can become an obstacle to someone who is searching for God’s truth.

As the Feast approaches, this provides an opportunity for self-examination. When people encounter us, what do they experience? Are we enhancing God’s way, preserving His truth, and remaining useful?

Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth.” The question is: What kind of salt are we?
