Grace is often defined today as “unmerited favor,” implying that nothing is expected in return. But this modern view can distort its biblical meaning. True grace is not passive permission to remain unchanged. It is God’s unearned favor that restores relationship with a repentant heart and makes transformation possible.

Much of Christianity today treats grace as an alternative to repentance and obedience. Influenced by ancient Gnostic ideas that devalued the physical and dismissed personal responsibility, grace has been twisted into a permission slip to stay spiritually stagnant. But that’s not what the apostles taught.

Biblically, grace begins with God’s calling, leads us to repentance, and provides forgiveness through Christ’s sacrifice. It restores access to God, opens the way to receive His Spirit, and empowers growth in character. Grace isn’t the end of the journey—it’s the beginning of a restored walk with God.

Even the thief on the cross, often cited as proof that no action is needed, supports this view. Jesus’ comfort to him wasn’t a guarantee of heaven that day, but a promise of future hope—a resurrection and opportunity in God’s Kingdom. His story affirms that God remembers those who turn to Him in faith, and that true grace points forward to transformation.

Grace doesn’t excuse sin. It reconciles us to the One who can help us overcome it. It’s not about doing nothing—it’s about what God makes possible when we surrender to Him.
