For most Christians, the message is simple: accept Christ in this life or be lost forever. That belief has fueled centuries of evangelism and missionary work, driven by the fear that billions will never know salvation unless they are reached now.

But is this really what the Bible teaches? Scripture suggests something far more hopeful.

The apostle Peter wrote that God is “not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). Yet billions have died without ever hearing the gospel. Could God’s plan truly leave them without hope?

The Bible reveals that judgment is not instant condemnation but a process (1 Peter 4:17). Those called today are under judgment now, but others will be judged later. Jesus said, “All who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth” (John 5:28–29). Revelation 20 describes a first resurrection at Christ’s return and a later resurrection when “the dead, small and great” stand before God.

This means there is more than one opportunity for salvation. God is calling “firstfruits” now (James 1:18), but the rest of humanity will be called in a future time of judgment, mercy, and restoration (Ezekiel 37:14; Romans 11:32).

This is not a narrow gospel – it is good news for the entire world. As Psalm 22:27 declares: “All the ends of the world shall remember and turn to the Lord.”
