A Call to Repentance cbcg.org
The death of Jesus Christ stands as both a witness to the world and a powerful call to repentance. From the beginning of His ministry, Jesus proclaimed, “Repent, and believe in the gospel,” making repentance the foundation of salvation. He declared that unless people repent, they will perish, emphasizing that all stand equally guilty before God.
Scripture defines sin as lawlessness, and all humanity—except Christ—has sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. The penalty of sin is death, but through Jesus’ sacrifice, forgiveness and eternal life are offered to all who genuinely repent. On the Day of Pentecost, Peter preached repentance and baptism for the remission of sins, leading thousands to conversion. Paul carried the same message to the nations, declaring that God now commands all people everywhere to repent.
True repentance is more than regret. Godly repentance involves sorrow for sin, a heartfelt turning away from disobedience, and a sincere desire to live according to God’s will. King David’s prayer in Psalm 51 reveals the humility, brokenness, and faith God desires. God does not seek rituals, but a contrite heart.
Upon repentance, believers are baptized, symbolizing death to sin and resurrection to new life in Christ. Through baptism and the gift of the Holy Spirit, Christians are empowered to walk in obedience, growing in grace and faith. Salvation is entirely by grace, yet grace never licenses sin. Jesus and the apostles consistently taught that genuine faith produces obedience and good works.
To love God is to keep His commandments. True repentance leads to transformation, shaping a life devoted to holiness, perseverance, and spiritual growth. Through Christ, forgiveness is freely given, and through faithful obedience, believers prepare for eternal life in God’s coming Kingdom.
