Not of This World – Jeremy Lallier sabbaththoughts.com
“My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here” (John 18:36).
The Jews of the first century, including Jesus’ disciples, expected a Messiah to overthrow the Romans and restore Israel’s kingdom (Acts 1:6). Instead, they got a Savior who sacrificed Himself and asked them to wait.
Jesus’ final words in Luke were, “tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high” (Luke 24:49). So, they waited. On Pentecost, God poured out His Spirit, and they began their mission: making disciples and teaching God’s word (Matthew 28:19-20), always looking for the promised Kingdom.
For 2,000 years, Christ’s followers have waited, living like they’re not of this world. Jesus said, “They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world” (John 17:16). Paul wrote, “Our citizenship is in heaven” (Philippians 3:20) and urged Timothy not to get entangled in civilian pursuits (2 Timothy 2:4).
The world wants you to engage in its battles. It’s easy to pick a side and fight over political, cultural, or societal issues. The hard part is stepping back and remembering that we’re just passing through, seeking a heavenly homeland (Hebrews 11:13-16).
Remember your purpose and destination: a city prepared by God, not of this world. Jesus is coming quickly. “Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20).
